On Friday April 15, 2011 at approximately 12:20 p.m. APD dispatch received a call in reference to a suspicious package in the parking lot of Home Depot at 1670 W. Orange Blossom Trail. Customers of the Home Depot were evacuated and a containment perimeter was established in the parking area. The Apopka Fire Department Hazmat team was assembled and the Orange County Sheriffs Office Bomb Squad responded to the scene. A little after 3 p.m., it was determined that the package was a non explosive device.

On 4-13-2011 at approximately 1139 a.m. APD dispatch received a call in reference to a possible shooting at Sunshine High School (899 E. Semoran Blvd.). Apopka Police Department Officers arrived on scene and learned of a physical confrontation between two male non students and a juvenile male student of the high school. The altercation took place outside the front doors of the school in the parking lot.
During the altercation, non student Roderick M. Brown, brandished a .22 caliber handgun and fired one round. The projectile struck his co-defendent in the abdomen and both males fled the area northbound on Sheeler Avenue. Within minutes, both individuals were taken into custody by the Apopka Police Department. The injured male was transported to ORMC and Brown was arrested and taken to the Orange County Jail. Brown faces charges of attempted murder, discharging a firearm in public, discharging a firearm on school property, carrying a concealed weapon and disruption of a school function.
